The By-elections for 2011 is over and we have some new faces for our great committee. Those who run but didn't get a position don't worry you can always try for the next committee, that is what happened to me too don't worry about it. And thank you again for running for the positions.

But some bad news first, as most of you have known by now, one of our great committee member, Yazmin Zulkhiefley, has decided to step down as cultural director, we will all surely miss her cooking :"(

MSA BLOGSPOT UPDATE!!!

First of all, let’s settle all the wishes that we owe you since our last blogpost. So, yeah, Merry Christmas 2009, Happy New Year 2010, Happy To Write Love on Her Arms Day, Happy Tiger New Year, and Happy Valentine to everyone out there and hope you had really really awesome time throughout the holidays. Well, with the coming great university year of 2010, MSA is getting geared to get back into action and bring all its awesomeness right your way. And what better way to do this than to commence publicity propaganda through our art and designs? Yep, you read it right. So let’s hit it!

First up, is our committee T-shirt design. Leave your jaw hanging in awe and envy as this is truly made only for the committee members. But fear not, dear readers, for the member-exclusiveT-shirt design is coming fast on your way. So embrace yourselves.

Second, is the new membership card design. Yep, it’s membership card 2.0 complete with MSA’s new logo and orange color (we just love them orange, don’t we?). Get your new MSA membership if this is your first time signing up or renew your current one at our booth during the oncoming O-week, and you’ll be certain to receive one of these babies in the comfort of your wallet and the envy of your friends.

Third, our O-week poster design! Yeah, you’ll be seeing copies of these at one of the O-week booth and when you do, yep, that’s MSA booth right there. MQMSA Blog Update!

As most of you who have received the 12 paged awesomeness of a newsletter, i guess it is appropriate for me, as a publisher, to take this time out and apologize for a mistake i've made in one of the newsletter's pages (ew.. public apologies.. hate em). Now if you can just flip over the pages to the Annual General Meeting page, you might have realized the faces of the MSA committees newbies.. i mean.. newly electeds at the bottom. Well, if you can just skim over to the faces of the new cultural directors, you might notice the mistake there... No? Of course, coz there is no cultural directors!! lolololololzomgwtfbbq. Yep, we do have cultural directors but the typo i've made was that the cultural directors has been confuzzled with social directors. Yep, Florinta Edward and Danny Hussain is our cultural directors - not social directors. So, what of the real line of social directors? Well, we're still contemplating on that and that will be announced in the not too distant future.

Pfft.. not entirely my fault. Danny and Flo talks non-stop. Who wouldnt confuse them with being social directors?

MSAMQ Blog Movie Review: 2012

I stumbled upon the idea of world's end when i was seven and found the theory of world's end to be on 12.12.2012 just a few years back. As much as everyone claim that everything is in God's work, one, obviously, cant help to imagine how this God's work will be like. So yep, i have some odds and ends here and there put together and thus, i have my own imaginative version of world's end and it was sick. But not being able to exactly explain to anyone what i visualize, i was pretty glad that 2012 (the movie) came out. But, does the director's depiction of world's end is as horrific and insane as i have imagine, or is it just a natural-disaster flick?

Storyline:

As if the idea of world's end at 2012 not enough to scare us senseless, the movie began with the first sightings of possible end of the world evidences in 2009. Apparently, an indian scientist, monitoring the earth crust in a copper mine found out that the earth core is getting more and more imbalanced due to a high heat wave from the sun. Fast forward 3 years later, the story takes position from behind Jackson Curtis, author of bad-seller Farewell Atlantis and full-time father who neglects his family coz of his manuscript. With his family tearing apart (and not to mention, the world as well), Jackson will have one last chance to prove that he is a worthy father who does care about his family - by trying to escape the end of the world.

The Review:

The storyline may be a turn-off to few and trust me, it is a turn off. This may be a spoiler but if you're a true blue catastrophe savvy guy, you might figure out that the sypnosis above already suggested that it is not the end of the world. It is just another natural disaster; earthquake on a global scale. Yes, you can say it is the end of the world but nothing much out-of the ordinary considering the fact that the Mayans saw it coming first, the Bible and Quran already prophesize an armageddon, and yet the movie done nothing in 'answering' to any mythological or biblical stuff. I can say that the depiction of world's end in 2012 do fit in some prophecy in the holy scriptures but there is too many loop holes and gaps that it turned out to be entirely a scientifical, natural disaster movie. Also, you may feel that the movie's storyline is made via tracing the exact storyline from Day After Tomorrow on a sheet of transparent paper, retyping it in Microsoft Word with a few tweaks here and there, and projected with an OHP via Microsoft Powerpoint with very fancy animation and graphical images. It is that much of an exact copy.

But you may wonder why i mention that long winded analogy beforehand. Well, the storyline, while of an exact copy, is presented in a way that we all love - with very, very fancy animation and graphical images. Yes, the graphic is insane and the size of the destruction is phenomenal. For a guy behind Independence Day, Deep Impact and Day After Tomorrow, this, of course, is nothing of a surprise. But with an added twist, the movie can be considered a mix of all the previous three movies. There's fire and explosion like in Independence Day, massive tsunamis ala Deep Impact, and gigantic cracks and quakes of in Day After Tomorrow. Needless to say, graphical depiction of a natural disaster putting humanity at the brink of extinction (again) in 2012 is the best one yet!

The Verdict:

For the most part; the movie is exactly as is shown in its trailers. The storyline is predictable (and not too mention, almost 3 hours duration) and it does get draggy at some part, especially the 'intermission' between escape scenes where the characters start talking to one another. The director obviously attempt to build up the characters here but with the distraction of the catastrophic eye-candy beforehand and the future ones to expect, i found out that this is the time, i observed, that the audience in the cinema took out their phones and start replying text messages. In a way, the intermission give you a good time-out from mayhem but by imposing boring dialogues between characters, it's not really a good strategy. But when the end begins (pun joke intended), things get really really hot - and i mean, molten-lava-spewing-from-the-earth's-core hot. There's plenty of narrow escape scenes in which is both heart stopping but makes the storyline even more predictable. Narrow escapes makes Jackson seems almost immortal and those that stick with him lives. But a moment someone strays away like a lamb, they die. It's good heart pumping plot but those who can see the pattern will find this who-lives-and-who-dies game very predictable. The only unpredictable element in the movie is the funny moments. The movie does feature aplenty and the fact that it popped out at the most intense-most moments, the funny moments and catchy jokes are simply brilliant.

I give this movie a 6.7/10 - Good: The graphics and unfitting humour, Bad: The predictability, And The Ugly: The draggy part of storyline. While there's nothing beyond awesome in the movie,the movie is indeed entertaining and i still recommend you to watch this movie in the cinema with big screens and super loud surrounds, that you can actually feel the vibration in the room. Downloading and watching this movie in a laptop will not do justice for this gorgeous movie but on the upside, you can fast forward the boring, predictable storyline. TO WRITE LOVE ON HER ARMS

There's always those time back in Malaysia before when Valentine's Day kicks in and everyone go all hyped out loving each other like they never been loved before. Well, call me The Grinch of Valentine but i find it annoying. I mean, seriously, if you really love someone like they have never been loved before and you show that only on four days in a year (Valentine, your birthday, your partner's birthday, you and your partner's anniversary), dude, you're not loving enough. why not love her/him a lil bit more on this oncoming NOVEMBER 13th?

Uh yeah.. it's Friday the 13th this November but i'm not referring to that. I'm talking about
TO WRITE LOVE ON HER ARMS DAY!!!! (TWLOHA)

If you're among those who will go "what's that?", do yourself a favor and slap yourself silly. Go on. But not that silly coz you need to read on!

To Write Love on Her Arms is based on a romance novel (if i'm not mistaken). It's a love novel so lovely that people love the phrase "To write love on her arms". I'm not too keen to put the sypnosis of the novel here but the main idea of that novel is that everyone deserve to be loved - no one gets left behind, no one should be left alone and no one dont deserve to be not loved (wait... what?). So yeah, in remembrance to that message the novel brought up, Aussies marked November the 13th as TWLOHA day, a non-profit, charitable event where, what you can do, is show your loved ones that they are loved - your girl/boyfriend, your kids, your parents, your pets, your friends buy writing LOVE on their arms.

There's nothing to attend to on that day so you have no excuse to miss this out. No punctured tire crap, no forgot coz you're too busy watching the grass grow, and definitely, no i'm-busy-studying-to-see-you bull either. What you can do is simple. First, take a pen (preferably permanent markers will be the best as you want this to be as permanent as possible), walk up to the ones you love, ask them for their hand, and write/draw/tattoo "LOVE" on it. Why? Just let them know that you're taking five minutes of your time that you want to tell that that you do love them. Easy peezy, lemon squeezy, cherry berry, go to 7 Eleven and steal a slurpee. Deepavali Gear up BBQ Review

MQMSA Blog Review: Deepavali Gear Up BBQ!

For a first event handled by the brand new-ly elected MSA committee members, the outcome of the event is awesome! Somehow, at first, it seems like a whole lot of things weren’t going our way – the weather forecast for the event day predicted rain, the committee members were all sleep deprived, the marinating sauce for the satay couldn’t seem to be able to get sweet enough, the cuttings of veggies for the acar caused bleeding fingers and cramped hands, and, yes, the weather on that day of the event did rained! As a matter of fact, we had to change the venue of the event from MUV greens to Mardhiah’s house. But, alas, as the fire from the BBQ-cum-satay-and-chapatti pit lit up, and the MSA committees take their position behind the counter, we immediately beckoned every attendees to hold out their paper plates out for us and, catching them totally off-guard, piled up all manners of delicacies of the day into their paper plates, screaming out at the top of our lungs, “U GOT SERVED!”

Yeah, they got served with a menu of rice, Danny’s chicken curry, Jason’s microwave-baked pappadums (no oil, no fat, just 100% pure microwave radiation – unbelievable? Believe it!), veggie acar, chicken satays and groundnut gravy, chapattis, kiwis, oranges and… wait for it… wait for it… chicken sausages!! (well, it is a BBQ event after all). The event started at 12pm and ended at 3pm with almost 100 turnouts and 100% satisfaction guaranteed, new committees, same great awesomeness, MSA Deepavali Gear up BBQ 2009!

Review: AGM 2009

hi everyone

MSA held its Annual General Meeting this year a bit late due to clashes with some other events. On Wednesday, October the 7th, 2009 at Lindsay Room, U@MQ, around 50 people congregated to witness the making of a new history (duh, I'm so good at exaggerating). Well, it started off with around 30 people and them as more people showed up, the room began to get full. The AGM was divided into two sessions:report and nomination. In the report part, Mr President delivered his farewell speech which was quite touching, followed by a financial report by Mr Treasurer (which was even more touching because MSA made so much this year and it was quite regretful that we did not spend all of them tsk) and the session was concluded by an activity report (accompanied by a slideshow presentation speciallu prepared by the IT Director). After 15 minutes break, the second session was commenced. It was the part which we all looked forward too; it's not like everyday we get to bombard people with questions and glare at them as theynervously truing to retrieve stuffs from their memoru. Though it was quite frustrating that onluy one person ran for the Secretary's post (ah well, Secretary is quite unpopularI we still received encourging nominations for other posts. Results were announced on ADND. COngratulation to those who wona nd may the Force be with you.

Review: ADND 2009

Glamor: Full Length and Fabulous (9^th Oct 2009)

Around this time every year, committees and respective members of the affiliated Malaysian society namely MSA, MSO, MASA and SUAMS will come together dressed in their best suits and gowns for a night of fine dining and stellar performance. Glamor - Annual dinner and dance 2009 marks its 10^th anniversary and is held at Star Room overseeing the jaw-dropping night view of darling harbour.

As the guests get settled onto their seats, the night started off with an amusing introduction video produced by the organizing committee, followed by the welcoming speech of the chief executive producer. The night went along with the serving of three course meals while talented musicians were scheduled to entertain guests with their stunning instrument playing accompanied by singers with their voice of angels, not forgetting the mystery performance by president of the four societies. Two hours went passed and it was time for the committee slideshow and announcement of committee of the year for each of the four Malaysian societies. Our lovely secretary, Mardhiah was presented with the award for all her dedication and contribution that MSA could not have survived without.

Then, the center stage was taken over by the heads of MASCA National and some oldies as they presented a gift after sharing their great moments with one of our Malaysian Consulate, Ustaz Zuhir who will be leaving Sydney back to Malaysia at the end of November. Next, the heart-throbbing atmosphere kicked in with the recognition of outgoing committee and induction of incoming committee for each society. Finally, the ADND 2009 committees finish off the gaudy starting with five pairs of couply ballroom dance, followed by the “Nobody” tango dance which has caused the audience to react frantically, before letting the stage filled with guests, dancing off to a great night…

Review: InterClub Game (ICG)

HI Everyone,

On the 16^th of October 2009, MSA, in collaboration with SSA, TSA, and CSS, organized the first ever ICG ( inter-club games ) in Macquarie. The purpose of the event was to bring the societies of different cultures together to further strengthen the bonds between the different societies. The sports that were played were basketball, squash, badminton, futsal and volleyball all held within the vicinity of the Macquarie University Sports and Aquatic center. The beginning of the event was dull but eventually picked up the pace as more and more members from each society showed up to lend their support to their given teams.

The weather on the day was perfect as there was no rain as speculated by the weather forecast. At the end of the day, it was not a day of competition but rather a social event as all the players put their competitiveness aside and just had fun. In conjunction with the event, a BBQ was held at the side of the gym to feed the hungry players and further present time for members from each society to socialise. The event started at 9am and came to a close at approximately 4pm, with players from each society going home contented and satisfied. The event ran pretty well for its first time and I certainly hope that the following committee and the next would make this event an annual event and maybe even get more societies to join in the fun.

Review: Malaysia Festival 2009

Hi everyone,

Malaysia Festival or fondly known as MFest is an event held annually on the grounds of Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour. What started out as a small scale event at the pavements of UNSW blossomed into an event that not just people of Sydney, but also people from other countries in the world to see and enjoy a glimpse of the Malaysian Culture.

On the 27^th September 2009, as early as 9 am, blaring music and voice-overs could be heard from Darling Harbour, where at the heart of the noise is Tumbalong Park, the venue for MFest. Meanwhile backstage, performers busied themselves with preparations for their performance of the day, the exhibition of the Malaysian cultures based on the harmony of the different races in Malaysia. While nervousness can be seen on the faces of each performer, everyone was poised and ready to do their best during the cultural performances, as it is not just any cultural event or the exhibition of gracefulness in cultural dance, but it is the portrayal of the Malaysian Culture itself. Patriotism may not account for much, but in the hearts of each performers, the Malaysian Culture have a need to be portrayed in the very best manner, as it not just symbolises the country of Malaysia, it also a small-scale depiction of life in Malaysia, colourful and gay.

The beauty of this event is its stellar cultural performance and of course the arrays of Malaysian delicacies available at a very affordable price. Aside from the dances performed, there are stalls erected for the people of Sydney and also for the Malaysians who are currently residing in Sydney for various reasons to have a taste of the Malaysian delicacies. Some may find Nasi Lemak to be spicy, or the Chicken Curry too hot, but they might as well find Rojak and Nasi Ayam to be on par with some of the tastiest dishes in Sydney.

With the likes of Rashdan Harith, Liyana Fizi of Estrella, Reza Salleh and One Buck Short, along with the various dance performance by the Malaysian students in Sydney, Mfest is one of the most happening, noisiest and loudest event ever held in Sydney. It is hoped that this will continue and get better as time goes by so that Malaysia will be known not just as another country in Asia, but also as one of the country with a culture parallel to other cultures that is considered as great.

Newsletter 2009 & Deepavali Gear Up (preview)

It is I, Adnin Azmi, your new publisher for MSA and with this blog post, I shall make an official declaration that I have taken the MQMSA blog under my domination! Yeah, it’s part of my 2020 world domination plan and what are better ways out there to rule the material world than to begin with ruling the cybernetic world?! Hahah! Yes, I am awesome, thank you for noticing.

Aaaaaanyways, let’s begin with my first actual update of the MQMSA blog spot. I have Mr. John Smith here as our guitarist and he will let out a stream of electric guitar riffs to bedazzle your mind and jolt your eardrums when I see fit. Thank you for being with us, John. First of all, we just had the official MSA Handover Meeting where old MSA committees gather hand-in-hand with us, new committees, in passing down their knowledge (and database) of their reign over the MSA in 2009. It was quite a touching moment as, indeed, those knowledge (and database) is irreplaceably valuable for us to excel in making the MSA of 2010 an awesome association… may their 2009 reign stays amongst our fondest memories…

They need all the spaces they can get as I am going to spill some beans on the food we’ll be having on the day of the event; Danny’s chicken curry, grilled skewered chicken on sticks with groundnuts gravy (yes, I know, it’s chicken satay… geez), chapati and many more (and with this “many more” here, I don’t mean “many more” simply because I don’t know what other kind of food we’ll be having but let’s just say, there will be way too much food choices and too little empty spaces to write here). Hi everyone. my name is Mardhiah Zaaba, i'm MSA Secretary for 2008/09 session, and i'm resigning in one day time. Owyeah (dance around the room like a crazy chick about to be kicked by a giant marsupials. owyeah owyeah owyeah) it is a bit sad that i am going leave MSA but well, i think i would only feel good about it if i can at least pass down what i know about being in the committee to those who are interested in inheriting the positions.

Alright, I admit I made myself too serious the last time I sent you guys that email about AGM. And I know some of you read my emails as your source of entertainment (which I find rather amusing because I can never understand my own writing) so yeah, the real Mard is back. So, today, I’m going to enlighten you guys with more facts and what-you-need-to-know about being a committee member for the greatest society ever known to Man: MSA. Eh, did I just say ‘the greatest society’? ( -_-)”

So, anyhoo, what i am going to write down here is something you must not tell anyone else who’s not MSA member. This is the secret ingredient of what makes MSA so good and yummehhh. Ok, i was just exaggerating. I’m a drama queen. And i think I had just made one of the LAMEst introductions in the history of introducing. Focus Mard, focus. Ok, so here goes:

(This could be the piece of writing with the most redundant usage of ‘so’ i’ve ever sent to you people)

President: this should be one of the most interesting positions you know? Because being President does not only require you to make impulse decision at times, making fair judgment, appearing cool at all time; if you have noticed, in most of our makan-makan events, President does not eat, until the crowd leaves. They must socialize and talk to members, or strangers who happen to suddenly barge in our events and pretended they are interested in joining the club, while the truth is all that they care about was the food. But, promisingly, Presidents (history have shown) always, i mean this, always; end up being in a relationship with a member of MSA itself, or someone from other societies around Sydney. So to you all bachelors out there, this is your chance.

Vice President: VP is the P’s backbone. If you believe in ‘Guardian Angel’ or ‘Patron Saint’, the system is almost similar, so VP is the Guardian Angel to P. In case if P seems to stray away from his/her job, VP can choose to either be a reminder, or even better, take over P. Yes, VP does have the power to do this. VP is known to be more sane, more kind-hearted, and more rational than P.

Secretary: Secretary’s boring jobs include spamming people and write lengthy emails to them to inform about any upcoming events or just anything, seriously. And, the most interesting part of all, secretary knows everything about you. Oh yes, Secretary keyed in every details you’ve written down during your membership registration. So they have that probability of remembering, if not, recognizing your full name and phone number and emails. Hmmm.

Treasurer: Treasurer not necessarily needs to be a cheapskate or someone frugal. But treasurer needs to be wise. Treasurer does not have to be top scorer in accounting classes, but he/she must be able to do simple debit and credit tasks.

These are the four positions in the Executive Committee. The system is like this, in any case of digression, or decision making, Secretary is responsible to provide options, Treasurer will then give financial advices, VP makes careful consideration of all the options available, P will then make the decision. Usually. When there’s only one man left standing (that is the P), he/she must weigh all bad and good, then come up with the decision. So we need someone confident for this. Treasurer and Secretary cannot be the same person, because Secretary works with words, and Treasurer works with numbers. Ah, well, that was just an excuse I created because i thought it could be funnier to say ‘No one in this committee can hold two positions at the same time’ in that way. I am LAME.

Sport Directors: they do not necessarily need to be good at sport. But they should generally know how to play several different games and have the stamina to run around the uni 3 times a day. But they need to have the guts to say ‘You played like sh*t, sorry you’re not selected’ or ‘Your team is a cr*p, practice more!’ knowledge in First Aid is an advantage.

Cultural directors: as long as you know how to crap your way out if people ask you about Malaysia, the definition of ‘multiculturalism’, the important dates of Malaysia, how to play congkak, why on earth we do not have Lion Dance in Macquarie or what is masala vade, you’re in. But, you definitely need to know how to cook, possess skills in dicing onions and slicing meats, or at least, understand the differences between boil and blanch, cut and chop, sauté and simmer.

Social Directors: as the name suggest, social directors are those who socialize, like non-stop. These are the kind of people if you throw them in the desert, alone, they’ll go schizo in less than a minute. Wants to guarantee your seat? Just make sure you’re a clubber at heart and able to stay sober when everyone else drinks their night up.

Publisher: Publisher is not someone who publishes manuals or books about MSA. Publisher in MSA owns MSA’s blog, meaning they write reports on MSA’s activities. At the end of the term, publisher will then work on the newsletter. To sum up, publisher is someone who’s good at making flashback and recounting. Publisher is not someone who attends an event, left, then forgot about everything. The key is ‘good memory’ people, good memory. Oh and please make sure you know how to upload pictures on Blogger.

IT Director: IT director, unlike popular beliefs, does not necessarily be a geek. You don’t have to be a pro, and you should not be a rookie. Intermediate proficiency in HTML coding, Flash etc etc etc (ah this proves my lack of knowledge in this field, please pardon my foolishness T_T) should suffice. Memorize MSA’s URL before coming to the AGM or i’ll kick you out of the room, thank you.

Welfare Director: the initial name for this post was activities director and we thought it would be much cooler to have welfare director in MSA, it shows we care (we do, don’t we?). So, someone caring please? You should be able to empathize with others and stay cool when people bombard you with weird childish questions and resist the temptations to shout at their face ‘do i care?’ because you are a welfare director. Need i say more?

There is a lot more stuff you need to know, but telling everything here would be redundant. These are the most vital ones, other information will be revealed to you once it is official that the post is yours. They may sound ridiculous, ah well they are, because the one who wrote this is not quite herself these few days (too overwhelmed with the thought of leaving MSA? No, i don’t think so), but some of them are the truth. So if you think you are the one, apply today. Review: Relay for Life

Hi guys,

I'm sure some of you should have heard of Relay for Life. Unfortunately, Relay of Life 2009 was on the 26th and 27th Sept whereas Mfest was on 27th Sept. This arrangement was really really bad. Many people who wish to go for Relay can't as they have obligation in Mfest. Hopefully, next year will be a better year where Relay for Life won't clash with any other MSA events.

Just to give you a brief introduction for Relay for Relay:

Relay for Life is a very meaningful event which aims to raise fund for cancer council and promote awareness about health lifestyle which reduce cancer. The not so serious bit will be it is a fun, outdoor and overnight fundraising event where team of 10 to 15 people take turns to walk around an oval.

Hence MSA decided to take part in this meaningful event even when this event clash with Mfest. There were 10 people in MSA Team. MSA had made arrangement to set up a tent as some of the team members wish to stay over night. Some of the interesting events/activities during Relay for Life were Miss Relay, Master Chief Challenge and the candle light ceremony.

Miss Relay was a competition where guys dressed up as girls and asked for donations. The "prettiest girl" with the most donation will be the winner of the competition.

Master Chief Challenge was similiar to the Secret Ingredient Challenge form Australia's most famous TV Show called Master Chief. Each team had to use the given ingredients and self-prepared ingredient to make a dish. The winner of the competition will be the team who prepared the most delicious, creative and healthy dish.

I like the candle light ceremony the most. People can write their wishes/hopes onto a Relay paper bags and lighted candles will be place in the bag to indicate hope (this is something like throwing a coin into a wishing well).

Overall, the event was the relay was very fun except on the 26th Sept night, the wind was every strong. Fortunately, the tent didn't give way. To raise fund, MSA sold chocolates and maange to raised around $150 for Relay for Lfie.

MSA AGM

Hi everyone.

It almost time for us, 2008/2009 MSA committees to step down and new people to turn MSA.

The following is what's in the email. I think it is already very detailed. I don't really think i need to explain anything further.

important stuff:
1) The date is Wednesday 7th Oct but the time is yet to be confirmed (checked email, facebook and blog later).
2) Venue still yet to be confirmed (Again, hecked email, facebook and blog later)
3) make sure to send us your nomination or you can do so on the day itself.
4) i will blog again if i have finalised the details of AGM.

Hope you are all doing well. After a year of reign of the most absolutely fabulous committee, we are now looking for new talents to fill in the post as the current committee will step down and give way to new people to shine through and perhaps, bring MSA to another exceptional level.
This year, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be happening on 7th October 2009. Other details regarding this event are to be announced in upcoming emails and blog posts.
Generally speaking, all committee members are responsible in planning, organizing and conducting activities. However, there are more to this than just what you see on the surface. Listed below are the positions available and brief descriptions on duties that entail for each of the post(please read carefully).

1. President
The President of this Society is responsible in leading the organization and making sure that it functions well. He/ she chairs or attends all internal (MSA) and external (MASA-UTS, MSO-UNSW, SUAMS-Uni Syd) meetings or events. Aside his/her compulsory duties in running the Society, he/she takes charge in motivating and encouraging participation of committee members. The president is encouraged to run for a position at MASCA (state) level.

2. Vice President
The duty of the Vice President to this Society is to mainly assist the President in every way including administering the organization in case of the absence of the President, helps chair or attend all internal and external meetings and events with or without the President. His/ her duty also entails supervising the committee members and chairs. He/ she is also encouraged to run for positions in MASCA NSW.

3. Secretary
as secretary, he/she must prepare meeting minutes and attend all meetings and events, and represent Vice President in case of the absence of the Vice President.

4. Treasurer
The Treasure job mainly requires he/she to Prepare and look after the finances of the organization. The Treasurer must also attend all meetings and events, and represent Vice President/Secretary in the absence of the Vice President and/or Secretary.

5. Social Director (2 positions)
Dance Parties (the Society main revenue) and other social events are under the responsibilities of the two Social Directors. The events may also be collaboration with other society which will require the Social Directors to communicate with social directors from other respective societies (MASA, MSO, and SUAMS). Generally, the Directors must attend all meetings and events. Dance Parties are traditionally held once every semester (total twice in a year) and it is the main income generator for all four organizations.

6. Sports Director (2 positions)
In the first semester in the University calendar, the Sports Director organize the annual Sports Carnival, also prepares members of the Society if any of them should represent state at National Games and Conference (NCG) or other sporting events. Generally, the directors are required to attend all meetings and events.

7. Cultural Director (2 positions)
The appointed Cultural Directors plan, prepare and cook for MSA events, become team leader for cultural performance for Malaysia Fest and/or Malam Gema Merdeka (MGM), and attend all meetings and events. This position requires you to have both culinary and performing skills (basics, if not experts). Over the years, MSA has been the main contributor in regards of performances for the annual Malaysia Fest.

8. Welfare Director
As the name suggest, welfare director is in charge in matters involving the welfare of the committee members and regular members of the Society. Welfare Director must be willing and available to spare times and hands to help members by providing help or advice in any matters.

9. Publisher
The publisher’s duty includes liaising with the Welfare Director and IT Director to do a recap of every activity or event to be posted on the Society’s blog and website. The Publisher creates MSA’s annual newsletter, and attend all meetings and events. Publisher is also responsible in collecting photos for the purpose of reference and promotion of the Society

10. IT Director
IT Director manages members’ mailing list, blog and official website, and attends all meetings and events. He/she must collaborate with the Publisher in maintaining the Society’s IT accounts and programs.

Before sending your name in, i would recommend you to give serious thought about it, do not apply if you want to be part of the committee just for fun, to add up another section to your resume or so to increase chances of being popular. This is some serious business we are talking about.
Beside the role stated above, all committee members must be involved or take up positions in the organizing committee for Malaysia Fest, Malam Gema Merdeka and Annual Dance and Dinner.
Please remember, we are calling for serious, dedicated, hardworking, capable, responsible, sociable, and enthusiastic people who can take up challenges and believe me, I am not just listing adjectives. Review: Strike Bowling

Hi everyone,

There are so many first time events in MSA this year. Bowling Competition was one of them. The bowling competition was held at Strike Bowling near Darling Harbour on 22th Sept.

Everyone was amazed by the atmosphere in Strike Bowling. Almost everything can glow in dark eg the bowling ball, pathway and so on. There were even a karaoke area and a bar to buy drinks.

There were a total of 30 people who participated in this bowling competition. With 6 people in a team, the 5 teams compete with each other to claim the prize of the competition. There were 2 game played each team where the first game was a warm up exercise and the later is the actual competition.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and of course the winners won the secret prizes. I don't really know what's in there. I think they are chocolates.

Review: Buka Puasa

Hi,

On 15th Sept at MUV, MSA have organised its very first Buka Puasa event ever.

For those of you who do not know what Buka Puasa is, it is when the Muslims break their fast for the day(Muslims fast during this Holy month of Ramadhan, everyday, from the start of dawn to sunset).

MSA's Buka Puasa was not only for MSA Muslim only, we also welcomed non-Muslim members to come and join us for the delicious food. There were many food served on that day such as fruit , vegetables salads, chicken bakar, curry chicken, nasi lemak (coconut rice) and so on. A lot of fruits and salads were prepared as these food are easier to digest which were appropriate for puasa (fasting).

After having the delicious food as dinner, Muslim members stayed back for prayers. I think it is called Maghrib or Isya and Tarawikh prayer. Once they have finished the prayers, everyone left home. MSA Muslim members appreciated the opportunity to do the prayers together.

Review: MSA AusEd Education Q&A & Migration Seminar

Hi guys,

Long time no see!

How is everyone doing in their holidays?

I have been really really busy for the pass few weeks since Mfest and Relay for Life were both so close to each other.

Here the review for MSA AusEd Education Q&A & Migration Seminar (The name is too long. I will just refer the event as PR Seminar to make life easier).

This is the every first time that MSA actually arrange a seminar for its members.

Basically, MSA invited James Kon form AusEd to give a seminar on PR or migration advice on 11th Sept 09 in Macquarie University.

As the name of the event suggest, the aim of this seminar is provide students an opportunity to ask professional advice on how to apply PR after graduating from Macquarie University.

However, the turn out did not meet our expectation. Possible reason behind this maybe due to the time of the seminar (many students were having class during that time) or the nature of MSA members (who are normally sponsored students who need to return to Malaysia to work or continue thier student).

Basically, there was a PR presentation done by James which was followed by Q&A session. The presentation provided basic and general information on migration. On the other hand, the Q&A session was very informative as MSA members asked many relevant and specific question.

Despite the low turn out, the seminar was a success as those who attended the seminar managed to receive first hand information on migration advices. In addition, all of them had a self-assessment which provides a brief insight on what they need to do in order to apply for PR in Australia. Of course, there were refreshment provided for the seminar.

Unfortunately, we forgot to take photos on the day of seminar so there're no photos on this blog. Too bad.

Review: MSA Rock Climbing

Hi Everyone,

I'm getting tired of blogging MSA reviews. if you do the counts correctly, up until now, MSA had over 16 events through out this year only and there are more to come.

Anyway, here the review for MSA Rock Climbing.

First, I need to apologise for causing some confusions regarding the date of the event. It was my fault to miss-inform that the event was on the 29th Sept where by the correct date was 29th August.

Now, back to the review. MSA Rock Climbing is an annual 2nd semester for MSA. If you missed the opportunity to climb like spiderman this year, you can also try next year. The venue for this event was Trafalgar Gym near MUV. The cost for members was only $10 whereas the actual cost was $20 per person. MSA was the one who subsidies the difference.

That's why it is always better to attend MSA events as MSA subsidies the events very very often. The event was suppose to begin at 11am. However, not many people came on time. I guess MSA members are still finding it hard to get rid of the "Malaysian Time habit".

Later, more and more people started to come. Not long later, the rock climbing room was filled with people. Basically, the rock climbing room is room where all the wall was the "rocks" and the "rock" was around 2 story tall. Yet, it was very scary when you are on the top.

For this event, there were a lot of first-timers. Hence, there was a need for an instructor. Who would think that the instructor was only a kid. I'm not joking. I have a photo as proof. Fortunately, there were some experienced MSA members there to help the first-timers.

Since there was not a time limit to the rock climbing service, most people left when they were tired or hungry. It was amazing for MSA members who were fasting on that day to come and climb the rocks. Most people went home around 2pm and by 5pm the event ended officially.

Rock Climbing is a lot of fun and very challenging. I encourage all of you to at least try once during your Uni years. You may even find some amusing scenes.

Review: Mafia Dance Party

hi everyone,

This is the second review of the same day.

Here's the review for this dance party.

Mafia Dance Party was the second dance party in the year 2009 and was also the first dance party in Semester 2. Mafia dance party was organised as a joint event for MSA, MASA, SUAMS and MASA just like any other dance party.

This dance party was at Darling Habour in Homebar which is one of the expensive clubs in Sydney. The dance party was on 14th August and started at 10pm and finished at 4am.

There were three main area in the bar. They were the dance floor, drink bar and and outside area. The dance floor was filled with people dancing and enjoying the DJ music. The drink bar was where people bought their drinks and sat down on comfortable sofas and table. Of course, the bar was crowded with people trying to buy drinks. The outside area was basically a smoking area and a place to enjoy the view of Darling Harbour.

Through out the night, the clubs was so packed that finding a chair or seat to rest was difficult. The theme of the dance party was Mafia so there were so many guys dressing up as Mafia by wearing Coats, hat and etc.

All in all, the event was filled with joy, musics and dances. Everyone enjoyed themselves and had a wonderful night.

The photos for this event was hard to find since no many people to bring their cameras to dance parties.

Review: MSA Welcoming BBQ (Sem 2)

Hi everyone,

How's Uni so far? Now, here is the review of MSA most recent food event.

On 12th August, MSA welcome all the new members and old ones from returning to Uni after a long 1 or almost 2 months of Semester Break. The BBQ was next to the Gym from 2pm to 5pm.

As the name of the event suggested, MSA Welcoming BBQ Sem2 was organised to provide a platform for new members to see/taste/feel what is MSA all about. Of course, MSA don't just serve the new members.

On the day itself, a lot of people came, both old and new members. The crowd started to grow after 3pm. I guess most people finished classes at 2pm or 3pm. At first, MSA is only serving Malaysian style fry noodle and drinks as the BBQ food like sausages take time to cook.

Not long later, our Committee, Jason, came to the BBQ with desserts. Guess what, the desserts we were serving this time was "Apong Balik" which is a Malaysian peanut pancake. This was the first food to finish in supplies. Fortunately, there were enough sausages to go over.

Within less than 2 hours, we run out of food except sausages. I guessed MSA members prefer Malaysian food over Australian BBQ food. To add more then just food to this event, MSA brought Frisbee and members soon started games of Frisbee. Since the basketball court is so near the BBQ, MSA members would not let this opportunity slipped away.

Something surprising happened on that day as well. The 12th August was also the birthday of one of our MSA members, Sarah. Therefore, everyone sang a birthday song to her. I hope she had an unforgettable birthday.

Members started to leave the BBQ and by 4.30pm, we started packing the equipments and tools. The BBQ came to an end by 5pm.

Overall, the event was successful in many ways such as being able to connect members via playing Frisbee games. The best part is, of course, everyone get to taste some delicious Malaysian food. Of course, the BBQ was also a great opportunity to chat with friends and make new ones too.

Review: Diversity Week

HI guys/girls

How's UNi? I hope everyone is doing fine. As you guys may knew, the first week of Uni was Diveristy Week. Hence, MSA manage to set up a booth and attract more new members to sign up.

After 1 week of hardwork, there were almost 20 new members sign up, I think. Anyway, there's really nothing much to say about Diversity week since nothing much happen.

Review: NCG 2009

Hello,

Do you know what is NCG? NCG means National Conference Game. Basically, it is something like Sport Carnival. However, NCG is sport event which involve all Malaysian from all state of Australia like Victoria, Queensland, NSW and etc. Rather than competing at student group level, the sports will be competed among State. That's why there was NCG Try Out to select players to represent NSW. NCG will be held in different state every year and is it NSW's turn to hold NCG.

MSA also have contributed some players to represent NSW. There were people from MSA who played Badminton, Tennis, Squash and others. I can't remember them all.

There were almost or about 500 players for NCG including NSW players. Due to the large number of people and large number of sports played from soccer to swimming even water polo, NCG was a 3 day event from 8th July to 10th July 2009.

First day was basically, the registration of players and welcoming session which include a BBQ at UTS.As expected, well-talented MSA members were invited to performance traditional dance as the entertainment of the Welcoming BBQ.

The second and third days was all about sports. Many sports were played and many volunteers were there to help out. The "unique" or the no-so-expected things to happen was, many of the volunteers were from Macquarie Unversity. Again, MSA members made MSA very proud as they continue to support MSA events. thanks a lot (have to say it a thousand time).

On the night of the last day of NCG was Malaysian Night. Basically, it was a dinner event where everyone dressed very well for a dinner where the results of NSG was release. That was the time where all winners went up stage to receive their medals. Some of the Macquarie players won some medal from some spot categories like tennis double, badminton double and squash. Again, Congratulation to all winners especially Macquarians ( Forgive me if i did get the sport categories right. I'm not very good with them.).

Last but not least, NSW won NCG again this year making NSW winning 3 times in a row. I guess NSW attracts a lot of talented sportsman and sportswomen.

Review: CARNIVALE - Dance Party @ SPACE

Hi,

It's me again. here is the review for the dance party. I was having some problem getting good quality photo as the light in Space is very bad for photographing. You know lar. Club sure dark dark one!

Carnivale was the first dance party of the year 2009 which is also a joint event between 4 Malaysian student group from Sydney. They are MSO, MASA, SUAMS and of course MSA.

This dance party was at Space Night Club at Liverpool Street and entry to the dance party started at 10pm. As expected, not many people came around 10 pm. It was quite quiet in the club before 11pm. People start pouring into the club around 12pm and more and more better came in.

Th crow was getting really big around 1pm. Many people dance, drink and chat with friends and many people made new ones. The atmosphere was fanstastic and a bit noisy especially if this is the first time you entered a club.

Some people started to leave around 2 or 3am. Some even stay in the City until morning for breakfast. What an amazing night. I'm glad that many people had a lot of fun and joy. Most important. nothing realy "Bad" happen.

That's all i want to say about the dance party. There's another one coming soon for Semester 2 so do come and buy entry ticket from us.

Review: SSA & MSA Paintball

HI everyone!

I just got my hands on some paintball photos so here is the review of SSA & MSA Paintball.

The paintball was on the 2nd of May, 2009 at Rouse Hill. The event was a joint even between SSA (Singaporean Students Association) and MSA.

On that sunny Saturday, all the participants from MSA and SSA gathered at MUV bus stop to waiting for the pick-up bus. There were only around 8 people who went for paintball. The main reason behind such low turn out were the NCG Try Out was the same day as the paintball. Hence the low turn out but who cares as long as the people who went for paintball enjoy themselve.

Upon arrival at Rouse Hill, everyone has to take their attires (ie the army pattern suuit) and guns.Oop! Almost forgot. they have to take bullets as well. After collecting all the necessary equipments and items, everyone have to attend a short safety briefing. Always safety first, right!

Only after the short and not so interesting briefing, everyone went to the battle field and the war between teams started. After a few hours of shooting and being shooted, everyone went back with bruise, scars and dirty stains.

Everyone had a lot of fun playing paintball that day and that is what matters.

Introduction to ADND and Committee 2009

Annual Dance and Dinner, more commonly known as ADND, is one of the most important and anticipated events for Malaysians in NSW. It is the culmination of all events during the year; the night where we look back and rightfully celebrate the achievements of the year, the night where we also look eagerly into the upcoming year, the night where everyone, and we mean everyone, deck out in their fanciest suits and gowns, dressing up by the theme.

One of the main highlights of this event is the announcement of the upcoming committees of each affiliated Malaysian society (namely: MASA, MSA, MSO and SUAMS) for the new calender year. In addition, it gives all members a chance to commemorate the experiences gained through a year of events, from the exciting National Conference and Games, to the distinctive Malam Gema Merdeka, to the cultural Malaysia Fest.

By coming together on this special night, we are given the opportunity to reflect on the ups and downs of each respective society as a whole, learn from our mistakes and share in the laughter, dance, music and food.

The 2008/2009 ADND committee is honoured to be able to be part of this long, ongoing tradition and to share these experiences with each and every member as well as each new incoming committee.

Be part of the annual Malaysia Fest by volunteering!

MFest is a cultural event solely organized by the non-profit Malaysian student organizations and volunteering students in Sydney celebrating the Malaysian culture. It will be held on Sunday, 27th September 2009 at Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour.

We still need student volunteers to help out on the operations of MFest before and during the event. It doesn’t matter whether you have experiences in volunteering or not – so as long as you show enthusiasm and commitment, we want YOU!

Crowd Control

• Ensure crowd do not disrupt the operation of the festival
• Ensure an orderly flow of que in food stalls area
• Ensure no trespasser or overcrowding at the VIP area or front/back of stage area
• Provide visitors information or any other assistance regarding to the festival if required
Example: Patrol the park, control backstage access, help handle any disruptions

Surveyors
Nature:
• Collect general feedback about Mfest
• Encourage the visitors to fill up a quantitative survey
• Provide visitors information or any assistance regarding to the festival if required
Example: Approach a stranger and ask them what they think of the event

All the above are form the email. Mfest is all about food, culture and people of Malaysia. Since most of you will be going there for the food, you might as well just come earlier to help out with the event. Being part of MFest is something great.

Review: Ski Trip

REVIEW: Ski Trip (15th July 09)

Hi Everyone!

As usual, MSA have organised the annual Ski Trip again with the other 3 Student Groups (SUAMS, MASA & MSO). The Ski Trip was 3 day 2 night trip at Thredbo on the 15the July until 17th July during the Holiday. There were only 7 MSA member who joined the trip which total up to 53 people including people from other Univesrity. This present a very good opportunity to make new friends from other University.

Now here the story of the Journey form a MSA member point of view.

Day 1:

On Friday noon, we were gathering at the MUV bus stop waiting for every MSA members to arrive. When everyone have arrived, we board the bus and went to UTS and UNSW to pick people from other University as well. I couldn't recall h0w long did we took to pick up everyone but it was definately not 15 minutes.

After picking up everyone, the bus started the journey to China Town, Canberra where we had our dinner. The food was alright but Sydney's China Town is definately a better choice. After dinner, we went to collect our ski equipment at Cooma which 1 and halve h0ur away. Only after collecting the ski equipment, we were on our way to the motel.

Day 2:

We have to wake up very early since there are 7 people and only 1 bathroom. After having a buffet style breakfast, we departed to Thredbo, the place where we actulay can see snow and ski.

Upon arrival, we have to attend very important safety and beginner lessons before trying to ski all by ourselve. Alnost forgot, when we came down from the bus it was snowing. The Snow was every big but it was cool since Macquarie Univesrity don't snow at all. Fortunately, the lesson wasn't long and we were able to start to ski before lunch.

We headed back to the motel arooudn 4pm and everyone rested and prepared themselve for the steamboat dinner. The dinner was good since it include various ingredients from fish, prawn and beef to veges, mushrooms and mihun. Everyone went to bed with a full dummy.

Day3,

The same early breakfast but we have to checked out from the motel before leaving to Thredbo.

The same routine again. Met with ski instrutors, took the lesson and then free time for ski. Of course, many "Pros" skipped the second lesson but I didnt since i'm a ski first timer.

After having a lot of fun, we departed to return the ski equipments and only after that we departed to Sydney. We did stopfor dinner on the way back to Sydney. We, Macquarians, were the last to arrive home at aroound 1am. Pretty late, huh!

Overall, I encourage everyone should go ski at least once while in Sydeny. It is a very fun and new experience. Do guys know that you can ski or snowboard at Thredbo? If you guys want to try both, then you will have to go ski trip twice.

Review: Gear Up Lunch

Review: Gear Up Lunch (30th May 09)

Hi everyone!

Now here's another review of one of MSA members' favourite "Makan" events.

It was a lovely morning but who will thought that the sky turned dark and even rained at the begining of the Gear UP Lunch. Maybe that's why we have some left-over food.

Everyone including the every first members who turn up early help us to transfer all the food and equipments to UNIT 179 of MUV (that's Mardiah House for those who didnt know). As a result this is also the first ever Gear Up that have to be organised under 1 roof.

Everyone was squeeing in such a small to avoid the rain. Everyone was being very careful to avoid staining other people's clothings with curry. Fortunately, the rain stopped and more people started to come. The atmosphere was great. There were so many chatter and laughter.

Anyway, I think most people enjoy the atmosphere especially when MAS is serving tasty curries from MAsti, roti canai, roti jala and kuih-muih. Most people enjoyd the curry and the kuih-muih the most. Personally, I like the kuih-mih the most. I'm sure everyone else did so since it is so hard to find Malaysian's kuih-muih in Australia.

After few hours of eating and chatter, people started to return home and leave the place with a dummy filled with delicious MSA's food. Everyone was leaving with a smile on the face regardless so the not-so-kind wheather. That's what MSA wants to see. A smile on everyone's face. :)

Reviews: MSA on Ice

The blog is dead for almost 2 months. Now is the time to revive it after long time of suffering(exams and checking exam results) and happienss(Holidays).

Let's begin with some reviews.

Review: MSA on Ice

MSA on Ice was the first ever ice-skating event organised by MSA. It was a very cold Friday night when MSA members starts to gather at Macquarie Centre (Macq Cent) around 6pm. There were around 20 MSA members who joined the event (not bad for the first ever organised event).As usual there are some late comers and some who came on time. I guess there are people who forgot they are in Australia and still follow "Malaysia Time".

After entering the Ice-Skating Rink, everyone had to choose and wore the not so comfortable ice-skating shoes. They are so big and heavy.Then the fun begins. The atmosfere was very nice since lights were off and there was DJ making some music. The atmosfere was similiar to a dance party.

A lot of MSA members were first timers so they had a lot of pain and fun, i guess. The atmosfere were filled with laughter (both laughting at people who fell down and laughting because people enjoy themselve). There are people so are very good at ice skating too. One of them can even skate on one leg (check the photos).

2 hours later, we everyone have to leave and we went home with new experiences and new friends.

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone had a lot of fun during the holidays.

Happy days sure fly away very fast. By the end of next week, everyone will have to go to classes again. I hate to say it but Uni is coming back again. That means tutorials, assignments and tests are all coming back soon.

As you may or may not know, the first week of Uni is all Diversity Week (the name is very fansy , i think). Basically, that's the time when the Court Yard is filled with stores and people. Almost every student group will be having stall to promote their club. Of course, MSA will have one store too.

Just drop by to say Hi. Remember to bring your friends who haven't joined MSA to the stall!!! HAHAHA! Also for those who haven't got their MSA T-shirt of Sport Carnival Cert, come to the sotre and talk to us. We will sort something out.

Heeiii! Another Cool MSA event is coming up coon.

I'm pretty sure the pressure that exam in coming soon is building up in everyone of you.( me too! I have been burning the midnight oil for some time and now I have panda eyes)

This event is here to give you one opportunity or excuse to relax yourself for one day before you start to midnight oil again. I know the finals are important so is you health(both mental and physical. I don't anyone go insane for studying too much)

Review: Riang Ria Makan!

Halo!

After one day of extremely tiring exercise form dragonbaoting, MSA is again feeding its members with fabulous and delicious Malaysia Food.

The menu of the day:
1) Bihun Soup serve with some chili/ sambal liked pasta.
2) Satay ( out most popular food of the day) serve with white rice cubs, cucumbers, onions and peanut sauces.
3) Kuih batik (best dessert ever)
4) triangular curry puff ( I don't know the exact name of the dish. Please me out if you know the correct term)

I think that's all we served on that day.

Thank God! The weather of the day was great, sunny but not too hot. Great weather for outdoor activities.

Food was served just few minutes after 1pm. More and more people started to come and more and more demand for satay causing shortage of satay supplies ( I mean the cooked satay not the raw ones) since satay will take some time to cook over bbq fire. As usual people came and go, meet old friends and start to chatter. Around 2.45pm people started to leave. I'm just glad there were still some satay left for our hard working committees.

Besides being a normal MSA Food Event, the event was very special day to those who participated in Sport Carnival 2009. On this special day, MSA was giving away free MSA T-shirts and Sport Carnival Certificates to our sportsmen and sportswomen. ( Tell you all hor, the T-shirts were designed by MSA Sect, Mardiah and certs were designed by me, MSA Publisher.)

2009 Dragonbaoting Review!

Hi everyone

MSA was really busy last weekend as there was Dragonboating on Saturday (9/5/09) and Riang Ria Makan on next day (10/5/09).

Not just that, MSA is still organising another event before Semester 1, 2009 ends right before exam starts. That is MSA on Ice which is on week 12. Anyway I will blog all the reviews and the up-coming event one at a time.

Now, let see what happened on "Dragonboating Day". (I don't think I should address the day of Dragonboaitng event as "Dragonboating Day", but never mind lar)

Everything begins when everyone woke up super early in the morning as we need to gather at MUV as earlier as 8.35am. Crazy, right? What to do? Macquarie University is so far away form the Anzac Bridge. Technically, Macquarie University is very far from the rest of the Uni and the city.Heiiii!!!!! This give me the feeling of staying at "Ulu-ulu" areas. (Ulu-ulu is a slang form Malaysia which means countryside or outskirt area).

After grouping at MUV, we have to take the bus to the city, another approximately 1 hour gone. At least we can sleep on the way to the city.(Not Bad)

Now, here's the funny bit. After reaching the city, we took the wrong bus to Anzac Bridge ending up at some unknown place. Due to this incident, we were kind of late maybe not so late if we consider Malaysia time.

Here's where the fun begun. On arrival, all of us have to change clothes, learn all the very very important safe prosedures from Naga Spirit Team and do warm ups. Suprisingly, there's a lot of us who can't realy swim and a lot of us asked for Safety Jackets. Everyone was very ecited.

After the very important briefing from Naga Spirit Team, we have to take turns to enter our boating. It looks a lot harder than you thought. The boat was wobbling all the time. (Really scary.)

Then, MSA's Naga Spirit leader started to teach on how to paddle the baot and control the movement of the boat. Since all of us were newbies, including myself, our paddle timing was really off and sea water was slashing everywhere. Almost everyone was soaked with the salty sea water. With more practise, we were getting better ie fewer water splashing and better paddle timing. ( Forgot to mention, there were 16 MSA members on the boat with 4 guys only. Where were the rest of MSA guys?)

While we were practising on the boat, we had some unexpected encounter with jellyfish. Since no electronic devices were allowed on the boat, there's no photos. (Sorry guys). The jelly fish looked like really clean, whitish, transparent plastic bag floating in the sea water. (that's the best description that I can think of right now while blogging)

After few round of practise, the dragonboating race begun. I don't remember who was in the 1st place. I could only remember MSA wasn't last. (Not bad since all of us were new to dragonboating.)

The final race was between SUAMS and MSA to decide who was the third place. Unfortunately, SUAMS beat us 2 out of 3 race. Too bad lar. At least, all of us had a great time on that day.

After the race, it was mingling and photo time! Oops! Before that, all four boats were placed back into its original place. You have no idea how heavy is the boat. All I can say they are freaking heavy. I remember correctly, we need nearly 25-30 people to carry each boat.

Later, it was lunch time or more like pizza time. More photos were taken and more pizzas gone missing (where else into stomach loh). The atmosphere were filled with joy, laughter and happiness. Great time to rest and to relax after all the hard work.

All in all, the outing was very fun and enjoyable. I recommend all MSA members should at least go for this fabulous dragonboating once during Uni years. The key lesson of the day was Teamwork! It will take every one's effort to move a dragonboat and everyone needs to work as a team to share the burden of the boat. Of course, all these will bui;d up better friendship.

I do like to add that dragon boating is very fun but it comes with costs like bady aching the day after, back pain and shoulder blade pain but all these will recover in a few days. hahaha. The pains prove that you work hard padding the boat.

It's me again for 3rd time in 1 days. I know you guys will be having headache when suddenly there's so many events from MSA.

First, you have to make up your mind whether you should go for the

on Tuesday night at 8pm at MUV unit 177.

Just get a 501 bus from QVB and stop at Miller St near Jones St.
Then walk along Miller Stand and turn right.
Walk another 600m and the pier should be on youleft.

HI guys,

Yes, you are right. It's me again from the same day after I publisher the MFest Performers Audition.

This time, I'm promoting something all of you will like. Yes! Free Food from MSA.

The main reason for bring up this "Event Makan" is to celebrate our success in the previous Sport Carnival 2009 as we didn't ended last this year but a 3rd tie with SUAMS. OF course, MSA will reward each and every sportman/sportswoman who had sacrificed their time, energy and money. Thank you all.

By the way, Sportmans/Sportwomans make sure you came for this food event as we will be giving out certificates and MSA shirts.(Hopefully, everything goes as planned. If not, now MSA shirt or certs to give out on that day.Then SORRY lar.Maybe next time.

Mfest Performers Audition 2009

Hi guys, How are you guys and girls doing??? I hope everything is fine.

As the Publisher, I'm suppose to upload MFest photos form 2008. ( You have no idea how hard it is to hunt photos from FB) (Thanks to those who upload photos onto Facebook) Here the main idea:

We need MFest PERFORMERS NOW!!!!!!!

For those of you who have no idea what Mfest is, it actually stands for Malaysian Fest, largest congregation of Malaysian around Sydney and this is when we promote Malaysian culture, which includes dances, martial arts and food to the Sydneysiders.

Yes I know the 'food' part sounds more enticing than the first two.

MSA has always been the major supplier for performances and performers for the event.

SSA & MSA Paintball!!!

HI Guys!

I'm sure some of you have received emails regarding the Paintball event.

For those who don't know what SSA stands for, SSA is Singaporean Students Association.(I hope i got the spelling right). Basically, SSA is almost like MSA.You just substitute Malaysians and Malaysia with Singaporeans and Singapore.

I'm here to provide additional information regarding the event.

When: May 2nd,2009
Where: Rouse HIll
Cost: $65 including transport and 100 bullets for free.

(Note: you only get the free bullets if you pay before Wednesday ie latest by tuesday)

How to pay: Contact me(Lawrence, MSA Publisher), Eric (MSA President), Giselle ( MSA Welfare) or any other committee members and they will meet you up at Uni or any convenient place.

What will happen on that day:
Everyone will have to gather at MUV at 10.30am.(Please don't be late.not Malaysian time ok!) A bus will be send everyone to Rouse Hill.

2009 Sports Carnival Review

Hi everyone!!!!

As you guys knew, we had our Sports Carnival 2009 recently.

I think most of you are aware about the Sports Carnival at UniSyd but not many knew about the Soccer Matches at Moore Park which was held a week earlier. My point is our soccer team made us proud by beating MSO (2-0) and they were so close in beating MASA (1-0) and SUAMS (3-2). Special thanks to all soccer players and supporters who went that day.

Now, let's see how well we did during the sports played at UniSyd which was schedule to start as early as 9am. Crazy right! Some of us have to wake up as early as 6am just to make sure we were not late for the match. These people are basically the volleyball and netball teams not so sure about tennis.( I salute you ar!)

The highlights of the Sport Carnivals ie the wins. Our badminton team was Second...just one game away from being the 1st. (MASA beat us lar). For basketball and tennis, MSA come 3rd by wining SUAMS. Basketball improve form the usual 4th place to 3rs but not so lucky for tennis since K, the Tennis Prince of MSA graduated last year. (by the way, K is a Malay guy who is really really really good in tennis, very hard to find replacement.Hei!!)

Without our dedicate MSA sport player, MSA won't be able to become joint-3rd place with SUAMS which great improvement from being 4th place for the pass 2 years. All of you desire it.

MSA Welcoming BBQ Review

HI everyone!

I hope everyone enjoy MSA Welcoming BBQ, our first event of the year.

It was held outside U@MQ building from 12pm to 3pm on Friday, March 6th, 2009.

The whole idea of the bbq was to welcome all of new members and returning members and provide them a good time and place to make new friends and chat with old friends as well.

Just minutes after we started bbq-ing, the queue was getting longer and longer. The sad news was we ran out of food except chicken wings around 2.30pm. Feel bad for the late-comers but what to do MSA's event "makan" is always so popular

Now, let's look at the pictures.

This year's MSA Welcoming BBQ is special. Not only we have chicken wings instead of sausages, we even have sandwiches and fried Mee Hun.

See so many people hanging around chatting with friends. Maybe they are waiting to go for another round of good food.

He even wore our MSA member T-shirt so supportive.
(Ah Mo is a Malaysian slang of saying foreigner as in non-Malaysian or western people or Aussie)

This is what is left at 3pm.There's no more food left, absolutely nothing. At least, we save some time cleaning.

MSA's Deepavali Gear Up BBQ.

Hi guys ie fellow members!!!

I hope that all who came for the bbq had a great time during the bbq. For those who didn't make it please don't feel sad because there are more to come.

This Deepavali Gear up BBQ is the first event for the new committee of MSA 2008/09. Thank God that nothing went wrong and everything went smoothly.

The bbq started around 12pm and it ended around 3pm. On that day, we served various delicious Malaysian food including the curry chicken, bbq chicken wings, acar, poppadoms and so on.

MSA's bbq events are so great. You don't even have to barbecue your own chicken wings and there are even people serving you great food. All you have to do is to turn up for the event and MSA will feed you.

Bored? Then Read This!

Hi Hi Hi?

It's close to 2am and I seriously need something to do. So I thought, "Lets do some revisions!" and here I am! *sigh*

Okayyy, here's where I should name the event I want to write about. So lets see, hmm...blublublub (the rewind sound) - Mooncake Festival and Buka Puasa Night!

This was MSA's first, night event and I can safely say that it was a huge if not full of success! The turnout itself was pretty impressive...or should I say, VERY impressive? At first we estimated the crowd to be around 50 but then the number came out to be double! So on behalf of the committee, I'd like to apologize if the food wasn't enough. Because you see, during this fasting month, everyone's giving the same excuse, "Alaa...can I have extra for my baby here?" *point to tummy*.

We honestly hope you enjoy the meal provided and also the limited-edition homemade roti canai made by one of our member!! How cool is that??

When the mooncakes were served, everyone formed a line so quickly that if the Nazis saw it they will be like "Achtung aAaaAa...". I don't blame them. I found em VERY tempting myself. I mean the mooncakes ya people? Sooo yummy and...cute. Amigad.

Next, the lanterns were distributed to all members by the committee. I was one of them. People was like;

"Qawiemmm can I have the one with shape??"

"Why mine is just round and she have the flowery-flowery one??"

"This...is...awesome...dude"

And I was like;

"Amigad"

Then, we made our way to the Uni Lakeside from MUV. We walked side by side, holding the lanterns in a line like the typical kindergartens we usually saw in Uni. Except that we are much more cuter...Of course.

We didn't actually go to the Lakeside because it was really dark and wet and...dark? Sooo, we only play near the Lighthouse Theatre because there's...light? Then we took a group picture which I didn't bother to check until daylight.

AGM: From The POV of An Insider!

Hi, My name is Mr Ex and I'm here to reveal the shocking truth behind the role of EACH position in the committee! *drum roll* Note that my identity should be kept anonymous to protect myself from being mentally tortured or squeezed to death by the semi construction truck parked at the end of Vimiera Rd.

Lets start with the position at the top of the hierarchy; the IT Director...i mean The PRESIDENT!
President plays an important part in the organisation. Besides the boring job specifications stated in previous post, by being President, you can meet beautiful ladies/guys all around Sydney for FREE. And if you're lucky, you might end up being in a relationship with them! Still not buying? Ask our ex-President Shawn Shim! :P

The Vice President, on the other hand, has the role of knocking, slapping or even spanking the President whenever he/she feels needed to make sure that the President does his job. VP usually has the opposite personality of the P. Thus, P and VP cannot be the same person because that will mean the P cum VP has a split personality, isn't it? Relationship status? Well, history has shown that VP has had/is having a relationship with fellow committee member :P

Next, the Honorary Secretary, his/her job is to jot down meeting minutes and other stuffs that involve brain and hands at the same time. Therefore, it is important for the coming S to have the same criteria. If the S only knows how to use the brain, then just wait for VP to hand in his/her hands on your face.

The Treasurer unlike popular beliefs, doesn't need to have an accounting knowledge. Just 6 credit points from MATH 100-levels will do the trick. Special considerations will be given to anyone who is deemed cheapskate by the Board.

Social Director is one of the positions that has 2 empty seats. As the name suggested, SDs must be able to socialize with the public like presidential candidates fishing for votes. SDs also must be able to stay sober after drinking 2 gallons of alco and have the guts to say "Show me some ID please!" to the club's bouncer.

Sports Director has 2 empty spots too and you don't need to be good at sports. Someone who have experience competing at state-level should suffice. People with extra rackets may receive favourable votes from the Board.

Next is Cultural Director which also has 2 empty seats. You must be able to cook awesome food or at least be able to search for recipes and apply it excellently. You must have experience or interest in cultural performances or gained Level 12 aka 'Batu 12' in Batu Seremban game.

Activities Director or previously known as Public Relation Director must have the ability to think outside the box. He/she must have a facebook account and the kind of person who like to poke someone and invite people to add applications.

Publisher starts working after the event is done. History has shown that the Publisher usually is the one who did the dishes after events and wrote its recap for blog and the annual newsletter.

IT Director jeng jeng jeng..plays the most important role of all. You will be the one who are close to members using the website and blog as the way of communication. Don't worry, you don't have to know HTML codes. You just have to know Flash and MySQL. HTML is so yesterday dude. History also has shown that IT Director is indeed good looking. Enough said.

That's all from me. I hope you guys have an insight of the true role of each committee member. Any misunderstandings and biased information are by no mistake my intentions. My apologies.

Hey all,

It had been an amazing year for us - the MSA committee members of 2007/08. We had heaps of fun planning and organizing events for our members. It’s now time to step down and hand over our duties to the capable hands of current ordinary members. If you think you have what it takes to be part of the committee and you’re serious about it, don’t be shy to nominate yourself for the position.

This year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on the 17th September 2008 from 4pm to 7pm at Macquarie University . We will update you again for the exact location of the AGM. There will be 13 positions available and they are:

1. President
Duties: Lead the organization and make sure that it functions well, chair/attend all internal (MSA) and external (MASA-UTS, MSO-UNSW, SUAMS-Uni Syd) meetings/events, motivate and encourage participation of committee members, and run for positions at MASCA (state) level.

2. Vice President
Duties: Assist the President in every way, administer the organization in the absence of the President, help chair/attend all internal and external meetings/events, and watch over the committee system and committee chair, and run for positions at MASCA level.

3. Secretary
Duties: Prepare meeting minutes, attend all meetings and events, and represent Vice President in the absence of the Vice President.

4. Treasurer
Duties: Prepare and look after the finances of the organization, attend all meetings and events, and represent Vice President/Secretary in the absence of the Vice President and/or Secretary.

5. Social Director (2 positions)
Duties: Organize Dance Parties and other social events with other social directors from their respective societies (MASA, MSO, SUAMS), attend all meetings and events. This position requires you to do a lot of traveling to the city especially nearing the date of the event. Dance Parties are traditionally held once every semester (total twice in a year) and it is the main income generator for the four organizations.

6. Sports Director (2 positions)
Duties: Organize the annual Sports Carnival (first semester), National Games and Conference (NCG), other sporting events, and attend all meetings and events. This position requires you to do a lot of traveling to the city especially nearing the date of the event.

7. Cultural Director (2 positions)
Duties: Plan, prepare and cook for MSA eating events, become team leader for cultural performance for Malaysia Fest and/or Malam Gema Merdeka (MGM), and attend all meetings and events. This position requires you to have culinary and performing skills. Over the years, MSA has been the main contributor in regards of performances for the annual Malaysia Fest. This position requires you to do a lot of traveling to the city and hectic dance practices especially nearing the date of the event.

8. Activities Director (formerly known as Public Relations Officer)
Duties: Plan events for MSA members, inform members about events (e-mail, Facebook and Blog), retrieve information regarding logistics, and attend all meetings and events.

9. Publisher
Duties: Liaise with the Activities Director and IT Director to do a recap of every activity/event to be posted on our blog, create MSA’s annual newsletter, and attend all meetings and events.

10. IT Director
Duties: Manage members’ mailing list, blog and official website, and attend all meetings and events.

Please note that besides the specific duties that are being listed above, all committee members will have other commitments such as preparation of events (i.e shopping, cooking, cleaning up, etc) and attending the events held not only by MSA but by the other three Malaysian student societies – MASA (UTS), MSO (UNSW) and SUAMS ( University of Sydney ).

Besides holding a position in the MSA committee, committee members will also have a commitment to other collaborated events such as Malaysia Fest, Malam Gema Merdeka and the Annual Dinner and Dance.

As a tradition, the President will be in the Malaysia Fest team and the Vice President will be in the Annual Dinner and Dance team. Half of the committee members will join the Malaysia Fest team and the others will be in the Annual Dinner and Dance team. Committee members are encouraged to run for Executive Producer positions in the collaborated events to represent MSA. Committee members who do not wish to run for any positions will automatically hold the director’s position. Most meetings will be held in the city and this requires committee members to go to the city quite often especially nearing the date of the event. All travel costs are at the committee member’s own expense.

For the positions of President and Vice President, any current ordinary member can run for these positions. However, since these two positions will be opened to ordinary members with no prior experience within the MSA committee, the current MSA President, Galven Chia, and current MSA Vice President, Shirlynn Ong will be elected as MSA Advisors to train and guide the new President and Vice President of the insides and outs of the organization.

None of the 2007/2008 MSA committee will be running for positions this coming AGM. So please do not assume that top positions will be challenged by the current 2007/2008 committee. Everyone will have a fair go at any of the positions listed.

The important thing is we want ENTHUSIASTIC, RESPONSIBLE, SOCIABLE AND DEDICATED members to be running for these positions. So if you’ve got these characteristics already, please, we urge you to run!

So what should you do in the AGM if you would like to run for a position?

Come dressed formal (if possible), otherwise smart casual would be fine.
Provide a short speech of around 3-5 minutes (a brief description of yourself, your past experiences/achievements with other clubs/societies if any, your qualities, and basically anything that would help you persuade members to vote for you)
Be able to answer questions from the crowd.
Lastly, MEAN WHAT YOU SAY. If you provide a very convincing speech and eventually get elected, we expect you to live up to your word. If you’re all talk and no action, then please do not bother running because it will just defeat the entire purpose.

A NOTE TO ALL VOTERS: THIS IS NOT A POPULARITY CONTEST. We urge you not to vote just because he/she is your friend, but vote because of his/her capabilities. Vote rationally please.

So if you think you’ve got what it takes to be part of this great society, please reply to Ophelia at o.domingo[at]yahoo.com stating the position(s) you would like to run by this Saturday ( 13/09/08 ). However, if you do not reply this e-mail, on-the-day nomination is still allowed.

Note: You can run for as many positions you want, but we highly suggest you stick to just one and the most two. For example, if you think you are not confident in getting the position you wanted, you can run for another position.

I know that this is a busy week for you. I'm also like you, you know; Wake up, watch tv, eat, sleep, wake up again, watch another tv and so on. So busy and I hate it.

That's why I'm spending my precious time here to help you guys out with this week's activities. As you all know, this coming Saturday, there are 2 important events lined up for you which are GRADUAN Career Fair and Mooncake Festival & Buka Puasa Night.

Okay maybe you guys are thinking "Hold up Qawiem, that's 3!".
Well I'll say, "You hold up dummy! The latter is 2 things in 1 event!" :P

Sooooo, as I was saying, below is an example how you could organise your day:

8.00 am: Wake up
8.01 am: Sleep back
10.00 am: Wake up...again
10.01 am: Sleep back...haha jk jk..Freshen up and iron your FORMAL wear
10.30 am: Open a textbook..any will do & read one line from any page...just so that if your mum call u up and ask whether you've studied, you can confidently say YES MOM, OF COURSE!...thats enough studying for this week.
10.32 am: Entertain yourself (Play games, watch tv, listen to songs, or kick a stray cat up the a$$ and laugh)
12.00 am: Assuming you're not arrested for animal abuse, head to the shower and get yourself ready (make sure you take a dump so that you won't crap your pants when the interviewer bomb you with questions you wish you know the answers for).
1.00 pm: By this time, you MUST already be outside your house, lock the door and flying kiss the girl next door.
1.13 pm: Are you now at Waterloo Park's bus stop? Sorry dude, you've missed the bus.

You see, planning is important. So why not plan your trip here and avoid wasting your time that you could've use to kick another stray cat?

August 15, 2108 - Exactly 100 years ago, there was this, relax but yet great event, going on at UBar Macquarie University, Sydney. I believe that this particular event deserves a recognition of some sort that it should have been received way wayyy long longgg time ago. With that, I shall start the review that you've waited a hundred years for - MSA's Welcoming BBQ Semester 2 in the historic year of 2008.

After minutes of screening pages and pages of dusty files in the National Archives of Jamaica, I got bored and continue reading OK!, FHM and ZOO magazines instead. Then I came to a conclusion - Jamaicans Know Nothing Bout MSA...well, at least in 2008.

This left me no choice, we have to do it 'OldSkool' style; The Internet.

After hours and hours of Google-ing and Yahoo!-ing with a little bit of Facebook-ing (Note: Facebook was a hotstuff back then and also one of the reasons why people nowadays are anti-social and like to play with stuffed animals), I then found out the hurting truth...most of the witnesses are dead (oh come'on, no hard feelings guys! it's a fuzzing 100 years already!).

But according to my grandpa, the BBQ was simply awesome and I quote, "Best gilee!!". He also said, "4 thoz of u whu din come, u miz'd out BIG time...datz SO unolympic! Restecpa!". He did keep some photos from the BBQ and here, for the first time, I take you back to the glorious days of MSA, in 2008. Enjoy!

Long time no hear?...Indeed. Well nothing really interesting happened for the last couple of weeks. We had our last event, busy with stuvac, planning what to do in winter, had few of our exams while still thinking of our trip etc etc. Nothing too serious I guess.

Kopitiam is a portmanteau of the Malay word for coffee (as borrowed and altered from the Portuguese) and the Hokkien dialect word for shop
